Writers Association

AN INITIATIVE TO ESTABLISH A NEW WRITER’S ASSOCIATION
The social, economic, political and cultural problems of Serbia will not be solved with the demise of President Milosevic. Slobodan Milosevic personifies a »cultural model« defined by the way of thinking which hinges on manipulated myths, deceits and delusions, developed and disseminated over the past ten years or so with abundant participation of the institutions of culture such as the present Serbian Writers’ Association and the Serbian Academy of Sciences.
A complete social renewal is impossible unless new institutions are created, in the first place a new Writers’ Association to bring together writers of all generations who oppose the ruling »cultural model«. Writers within the new Association shall support adherence to the professional code, and work against political violence and censorship, for a free and open democratic society relieved of nationalist dogmas and bias. A group of writers of the middle and younger generation gathered within the Initiative Board shall act as founders of the new Writers’ Association.
The Association is envisaged to have its own magazine "Pecat" ("The Seal") which is to be published as a biweekly addition to the daily paper "Danas", as well as its own publishing firm to bring out the books of authors from the territories of the former Yugoslavia and important foreign writers.
In order for the Association to start its operation it would be necessary to secure appropriate premises and the essential technical and other facilities required for the above mentioned activities.
The Initiating Board includes: Nenad Prokic, writer, director of BITEF theatre, Biljana Srbljanovic, drama writer, Drinka Gojkovic, essayist and translator, Stojan Cerovic, journalist, Mileta Prodanovic, painter and writer, professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Vladimir Arsenijevic, writer, Dragan Velikic, writer, Ivan Medenica, theater critic, Milan Djordjevic, writer, Filip David, writer, professor at the Faculty of Drama Arts.
